Commercial electrician for Parnell businesses

Parnell's business association represents more than 1,100 businesses and commercial property owners, from boutiques and galleries to offices, cafes, bars and restaurants along Parnell Road and its side streets. Our registered electricians do the commercial electrical work that keeps them open, from a single new circuit to the electrical side of a full fit-out.

Parnell Road, building by building

Parnell Road has been built on continuously since the 1840s, and it shows. The Unitary Plan's character statement records a concentration of one and two storey shops from the 1880s to the 1920s, built of timber, brick or plastered brick, some still with their original timber shop fronts and recessed entries. Further up the hill, old houses have been turned into shops and offices while keeping their residential form, Parnell Village is a row of older shops restored in the 1960s, and south of Ruskin Street there are post-war office and apartment buildings. In the lower part of the road is the Geyser Building, finished in 2012.

Each of those is a different electrical job. A brick shop of 1900 has solid walls and limited ceiling space, so new circuits are planned around what can be reached. A house converted to offices often still has a domestic switchboard and wiring that was never meant for a full office of computers, printers and heat pumps. Newer office buildings have proper risers and distribution boards, but tenancy changes leave behind circuits nobody can account for. We look at the building first and plan the work around it.

Cafes, bars and restaurants

Parnell's business association describes the suburb as renowned for its restaurants and bars, and hospitality asks a lot of a building's wiring. A commercial kitchen runs cooking equipment, extraction fans, dishwashers, chillers and freezers together, often on circuits that were laid out for a shop that sold something else. When a new operator takes over a tenancy, the first question is whether the board and the supply can carry the kitchen they want to build.

We plan hospitality work around service. Most changes can be done before opening or after closing, and a planned shutdown is agreed in advance so refrigeration is not left off for long. When something fails during service, call 021 156 4005: our emergency electricians are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Certificates for commercial work

Prescribed electrical work in a shop or office is certified in the same way as in a home. WorkSafe sets out the risk categories of prescribed electrical work and the certificates that go with them: Certificates of Compliance, Records of Inspection and Electrical Safety Certificates. When our work is finished and tested you receive the certification that applies to it. Keep it with your lease documents, because landlords and insurers both ask for it.

Questions from Parnell businesses

Can you work outside our trading hours?

Yes. Planned work in a shop, office or restaurant can be booked for before opening, after closing or a quiet day, so customers are not working around us.

We are taking a lease on Parnell Road. What should we check?

Ask the landlord for the certificates for past electrical work and how much supply the tenancy has. Then have the board and wiring looked at against what you plan to run, before you commit to a layout. It is much cheaper to know now than after the fit-out.

Our building is in the special character area. Can we change the shop front lighting?

Inside the shop, yes. Lights fixed to the outside of a character building, under the verandah or on the facade change how it looks from the street, so talk to the landlord and check with Auckland Council before that part goes ahead.

Do you work with our builder or shopfitter?

Yes. On a fit-out we work from the same drawings and programme, so the cabling goes in before the linings and the final fit-off happens once the joinery is in.

Who arranges the inspection on high-risk work?

We do. Work such as fitting a higher capacity main switchboard, or moving one where the mains have to be extended or rerouted, is inspected by a licensed electrical inspector, and we arrange it as part of the job.
