About Parnell Electrician
Parnell Electrician is a New Zealand owned and operated team of registered electricians, doing residential and commercial electrical work across Auckland since 2009. Parnell asks more of an electrician than most suburbs: it was Auckland's first suburb outside the central city, Hulme Court on Parnell Road dates from 1843, and its streets mix timber villas, brick shops, 1920s apartments and modern offices, each wired in a different era. In buildings like these it pays to know what is behind the walls before anything is changed, which is why rewiring an older Parnell home starts with tracing the circuits that are already there.

Why Parnell calls us
A lot of Parnell's buildings are valued for their looks as much as their age. Much of Parnell Road sits inside the Auckland Unitary Plan's special character overlay, which values its early shop fronts with timber joinery, its verandahs and the old houses that now hold shops and offices. Electrical work in those buildings has to be neat as well as safe, with new cable routed so the original features stay as they are, and we plan every job that way.
We also know that a power problem here is rarely convenient. A restaurant on Parnell Road cannot trade without power, and an apartment owner cannot reach the meter room without the building manager. Our electricians are available for call-outs at any hour, and the prescribed work they do is tested and certified before they leave.

Can you work on a heritage or character building in Parnell?
Yes. Much of Parnell Road, up to St Stephens Avenue, is a special character area in the Auckland Unitary Plan, and parts of the surrounding residential streets are in its residential special character overlay too. Inside, we route cable through roof spaces, under floors and inside existing walls so plaster, timber and stonework are left alone. If a job would change the outside of a character building, such as a new meter box position or outdoor lighting, check with Auckland Council before work starts, and we will plan the electrical side around what is allowed.
Do you work in apartment buildings?
We do. Parnell has apartments from every era, from the five-storey Mayfair Apartments of 1928 to the post-war blocks further up Parnell Road. In an apartment the meters, the main switchboard and the cable risers are usually in shared areas, so tell us who manages the building and we will arrange access with them before we arrive.
Who looks after the power line to my house?
Usually you do, from the boundary in. Vector explains that it generally owns the network up to the point of supply, usually an isolating fuse at your boundary or on the nearest pole, and the property owner owns the service line from there to the meter. The meter itself is your power retailer's responsibility. If the line to an older Parnell house looks frayed or worn, we can check it and replace it.
Will I get a certificate for the work?
Yes. When we install or alter fixed wiring you receive a Certificate of Compliance, and the work is tested before we finish. Some work, particularly on the main switchboard, the mains and the main earth, also has to be inspected, and we arrange the licensed electrical inspector. Keep the certificates with your house papers, because insurers and buyers often ask for them.
How do I get a price for a job?
Call 021 156 4005, or use the form below or on our contact page, with your address, what you need done and anything you have noticed, such as a circuit that trips or a room that needs more power points. For a shop, office or restaurant, tell us your trading hours so we can plan around them.
